A spider bite can change your life

A little while ago a spider bit my leg. It started with a stabbing pain. Trying to find out where it came from I saw a spider. It vastly changed my attitude towards spiders. I never had trouble
picking up or handling spiders before, but ever since that bite all my friendly feelings vanished.

Shortly thereafter I had another unpleasant experience. There is this place that Inger and I visit regularly where many fearless swallows fly around. Up to now we’ve had ample opportunity to admire these beautiful creatures. Until one day as we were visiting the swallows I felt a big raindrop falling on my head. I thought it was about to start raining but when looking up I only saw a clear blue sky and a few swallows. That raindrop was quite big and starting running down my forehead. As you can guess, it wasn’t a raindrop…. Ever since I look at swallows differently.

A few years ago we went to see my mother-in-law who was in the hospital at the time. As we returned to the car, the rear window had been smashed, the trunk was open and the computer bag was stolen. To be honest ever since I always use the paying car park when going to that hospital.

It is striking that the older people get, the more cautious they become. The question remains whether this is pure prudence. In order to exclude as many risks as possible, people build walls around themselves and in doing so create their private little prisons. I agree it is good to be cautious unless it is fear in disguise.

I’m walking on this earth a little over half a century now and I can’t remember many more bites than that one spider bite and it happened only once that a bird thought I was a toilet. As for
mileage, I’ve traveled enough miles to go around the earth a couple of times but I experienced only one car break-in. So I have many more reasons to be thankful than to cautiously safeguard myself.

It is something we all should pay attention to. For some reason bad memories seem to influence us more than good memories. Actually we allow bad memories to linger. In relationship with your heavenly Father you can learn to trust and come off that distrust. This is often the difference between living and surviving!

We should be grateful that we were given a kingdom that cannot be shaken… Hebrews 12:28
